Current students
The Samuel C. Williams Library is an invaluable resource for WebCampus students. The Library contains over 30,000 journals available in full text and 6,000 electronic books. All journal databases and electronic books are accessible from off-campus to both on-campus and distance education students via the Library home page.

Access to these subscriber sites is free for students, but your computer must be configured accordingly. Please view the IT department’s page on how to access the library databases from off campus.
Tutorials for Using Library Resources
| Topic | Description |
|---|---|
| Dissertation and Thesis Research | The Dissertation and Thesis Research Online Tutorial has been designed for both on- and off-campus students wishing to learn how to use the Library's databases and resources for scholarly and professional research. While the tutorial is geared toward highlighting some of the tools necessary for Ph.D. Dissertation and Master’s Thesis research, this tutorial can be watched by anyone (students, faculty, or staff) wishing to learn some advanced library research tips. |
| Telecommunications Management & Technology | The Telecommunications Management & Technology online research tutorial has been designed for both on- and off-campus TM students wishing to learn how to use the Library's databases and resources for academic and professional research. (35 Minutes) |
| Hoovers Company Records | Proquest (the database provider company that handles Hoover's publication) has made some recent changes to the Hoover's interface, and unfortunately the Hoover's publication is no longer accessible by a direct link. This tutorial shows how to find company information in the Hoover's publication. |
| Connecting from Off Campus | All currently registered Stevens students, faculty, and staff are eligible for access to Library subscription databases. Your Stevens Pipeline username and password are required for authentication to access them from off campus. |
The library databases page is the gateway to all online collections for research. Databases contain full text and abstracts, patents, standards, books, encyclopedias, and dissertations. Checking the "Info" page for each database is a good way to see if it contains the type of information you are looking for. Hoover’s Company Records, Business Source Premier, Science Direct, Academic Search Premier, IEEE Xplore, Knovel and Scopus are just a few of the databases that are available.
Books
Electronic books can be found in the list of databases or online through the Online Library Catalog. Electronic books include:
-ASM handbooks
-Britannica Encyclopedia online
-CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
-Engineering Handbooks online
-Safari Tech Books online
At this time, distance education students are not able to check out the books located in the library or books found in WorldCat without visiting the campus in person. Books cannot be sent to an off-campus location.
Articles: Journals, Dissertations, Magazines, Newspapers
High quality research journal, magazine and newspaper articles are available in full text through the online databases. Use the full text journal locator to find which databases contain the full text of a particular publication. The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Nature, Science and the Harvard Business Review are just a sample of the 30,000 publications available online. Dissertations written by Stevens Ph.D.graduates are available online via the library’s online catalog.
Articles that are not available in full text online can be obtained through the Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery service available in the Library. Off campus students can set up a deposit account to pay for articles. The fee is $1 per article, $10 for rushed delivery service.
Reference Help
Librarians are available to help all students with their research questions. Librarians can be contacted either via email, phone, or IM. Please see the reference services page for information on how to contact a reference librarian.
Special Information for Faculty:
Linking to articles in library databases:
Most library databases provide a way to use a URL or Digital Object Identifier (DOI) that allows you to reference and point to a specific document or article that is in a library database. This is useful in situations where students need to use specific articles for a class, and is particularly useful in online course software such as WebCT or course webpages. The URL or DOI for a document doesn’t change, so from semester to semester the links don’t have to be updated. Because URLs and DOIs link directly to library databases, paper or digital copies of articles do not need to be created, thus avoiding any possible copyright infringement. Students do need to create a VPN connection to connect to the library databases from off campus to use persistent URLs or DOIs.
To find out more about using persistent URLs or Digitial Object Identifiers (DOIs), visit the Library website or view the Using Persistent URLS pdf.
