Optical scientist Rainer Martini
Rainer Martini is an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at Stevens and heads a newly formed laboratory studying ultrafast laser spectroscopy and high-speed communication. His research is in free-space optical links and high-speed laser systems. Martini received a Diploma in Physics from the University of Bonn and his Ph.D. in Physics from the RWTH in Aachen, Germany. His first studies were in far-infrared (terahertz-) emission in which he uncovered a new light amplification scheme. Afterwards, he entered a joint research program with Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, and Stevens in which he demonstrated the fastest analog and digital modulation of mid-infrared semiconductor lasers and established the first mid-infrared free-space optical link based on a semiconductor laser.
