Dr. Berkof is the Distinguished Industry Professor of Mechanical Engineering and co-Founder and Director of the Stevens Pharmaceutical Manufacturing (PME) Program since 2002. The PME program currently offers over 60 course sections on campus and online. Dr. Berkof teaches courses in the Mechanical Engineering, Interdisciplinary Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing programs. He coordinates the Engineering Graphics courses, and is an instructor for Senior Design Projects.

He previously worked with the pharmaceutical industry at Raytheon/United Engineers and Constructors in Philadelphia as Manager, Advanced Manufacturing & Systems Integration, and engineering projects with Sandoz multi-product bulk pharm plant, Hoffmann-La Roche pharma tech center and launch complex, Ciba-Corning Diagnostics' modernized medical diagnostic test manufacturing facility, and Ares-Serono's biotech production facilities.

He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Mechanics from the City University of New York, and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University, and spent many years in industry in Engineering Management positions related to the development of complex automated systems, from concept and design to testing and acceptance.  He has authored over 30 publications, many relating to dynamics of machine systems, and has been active in ISPE and ASME (Life Fellow), as well as other technical professional societies. He holds P.E. licenses in Pennsylvania and New York.
